Good Good Things – May 2025
Please enjoy a little roundup of things that I deem “good” and “of interest.”
What does “second-screen entertainment” mean? Matt Zoller Seitz defines it and gives you a spot-on example.
Want to see what songs your favorite band is playing during their tour? If no, I get it, you like to be surprised. If yes, then go to setlist.fm. For example, here’s what Momma played on their recent May 24th show. It’s also a great day-after resource when trying to remember what songs they played when you are bragging to your friends about actually leaving your house and going out to a show.
“Jeff, where can I see how good frozen pizza is made?” Here you go!
Want to learn more about old school R&B? Let DJ, producer, and hip hop icon Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest, Jazz Is Dead) teach you a few things.
Watching experts in a field meticulously bring old things back to life is one of my favorite ways to relax; it’s soothing, stress-free entertainment, and that’s what I’m all about. Check out Restoring the First Star Wars Poster and all of the Fourth Cone Restoration projects, and see how they get fold creases and discoloration out of very old and valuable posters.
When Babe Ruth played baseball:
– the average fastball was 23 mph
– dead center was 130 feet
– uniforms had 2 extra “hot dog” pockets
– bases were sacks of sorghum
– average player age: 47
– umpires carried guns
– gloves were made of wood
– all outfielders were on horseback
Thinking about getting away from it all this summer and visiting a popular campsite? Graham Averill has some sage advice advice: “Scoring a campsite at popular national parks in the U.S. this summer is going to be harder than ever. Here are our favorite options nearby”

“In 1970, coffee growers hired an ad agency to convince young British people to drink more coffee.” Read and watch: 1970 BBC Documentary about Ridley Scott’s Coffee Commercial
Do you enjoy trail running and chill podcasts on YouTube? Well, do I have a treat for you. Check out the Boulder Boys Show. Five professional ultra-trail/mountain runners — Adam Merry, Seth Ruhling, Drew Holmen, Moises Jimenez, and Matt Daniels — hang out and talk shop, documenting the highs and lows of their niche but growing sport. It’s fun, informative, positive, and an all-around good vibe. I’d start with the recent episode where they celebrate Seth’s big win at Canyons.
Is this The Most Incredible Bakery in Copenhagen? Watch and decide for yourself. I say yes based on Danish people’s (and my) love of buns with cheese. A very common breakfast or snack in Denmark is called “bolle med ost,” which translates to “bun with cheese”. This simple dish often features a soft, buttery bun with a slice of cheese, frequently gammel knas or comte.

Do you have or know a Fun Dad? Reward him with a shirt!
Finally, “Philly Justice” has seen the light of day.
“The trains in San Francisco’s Muni Metro light railway, for example, won’t start up in the morning until someone sticks a floppy disk into the computer that loads DOS software on the railway’s Automatic Train Control System (ATCS).” Read more from “Still booting after all these years: The people stuck using ancient Windows computers”
My new favorite band made me rethink my staunch “no band should have three guitar players” stance. I am now firmly in the “some bands should have three guitar players” camp. Wishy is one of them: big, bright melodies and hooks with some welcomed waves of sonic guitar goodness. Love everything about these kids.
Way back during the dark indoor days of Covid days when I was looking for a lot of content to view on YouTube I discovered parkour and bouldering: two thing I cannot do in my advanced age but absolutely love following. Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that is performed on small rock formations or artificial rock walls without the use of ropes or harnesses. The International Federation of Sport Climbing is a quality follow, they livestream a bunch of the indoor competitions and you don’t need to know anything about the sport to enjoy and appreciate the insane amount athleticism involved. Start with this recent Women’s Boulder Final | Salt Lake City 2025 competition and see why I was tearing up with joy at the end.
My buddy comedian Chip Chantry has a scorching hot new podcast called “SunburntPod” with Emmy-winning producer Thomas O’Brien. Lather on some SPF 100, pour yourself a frozen marg, and drink in their latest episode.

What do people eat during an ultramarathon? Answer: Food for the Long Run
A British chap named Ed Pratt kayaked down the Thames River from its source to the sea. “I’m attempting to travel from the source to the sea down the River Thames. That’s 210 miles of wading, swimming, and kayaking along Britain’s busiest waterway. And to make things harder, I’m doing the whole thing alone and self-supported.” It’s a very fun trip, join him!
I am currently obsessed with the five baby groundhogs that live under my shed. This morning I gave them half a head of lettuce and I could tell they were like “This guy rules, we love Jeff.” In addition to my new ground-based friends I am always staring out my window and seeing what my fine feathered friends are up to.
I’m old, so of course, I’m considering: How to Start Birding
