Good Good Things – Issue 34
Hell yes, Spooky Season has begun so I will lean heavily into Halloween-based goodies in this issue to get us in the proper mood. Here are some ghoul ghoul things…
The Office Halloween Specials Supercut
Always good to check in with Dwight and the crew, especially on Halloween.
The Most Popular Halloween Costume the Year You Were Born

1972 – Don Corleone! How awesome would it be seeing a bunch of little marble-mouth Marlon Brandos running around your neighborhood. Find out what costume was popular when you were born on Mental Floss.
Halloween has definitely evolved over the years, from scary clowns and haunting paper masks in the 1920s and ‘30s to cartoon characters and celebrities in the 2020s. The most common costume from the year you were born not only reflects the fashion trends of the time, but also the pop culture moments that took over screens.

“Blue Planet III” Trailer!
Sir David Attenborough is so back!
Blue Planet III is the third series to carry the Blue Planet name. The first, 2001’s The Blue Planet, won multiple Emmy and BAFTA TV awards for its music and cinematography, while the second, 2017’s Blue Planet II, was the most watched programme that year. Both explored the world’s oceans, showing marine ecosystems and wildlife, with Blue Planet III scheduled to show the same.
New Halloween Costumes on Letterman
Little trick-or-treaters Lindsay Lohan and Lacey Chabert visit Dave’s house on Halloween. In related costume news, little Macaulay Culkin once walked through Dave’s front door dressed up as the “piping-hot half” of a McDonald’s McDLT burger. See many more years of Halloween Costumes on Letterman.
What’s that? You don’t know what a McDLT is? Here ya go:
Jordan Peele Ranks His Top Horror Movies
I’m too scared to watch most of these classics but I enjoyed watching Jordan Peele, a new master of the genre, break them all down. “Let The Right One In” (2008) was the last horror movie I watched. It was a good one to go out on.
Banned Books Week

The 2026 event is an opportunity to inform communities about the escalation in censorship and the importance of the right to read. This year’s theme is “Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read.” ALA offers free downloads, resources, events, and more to support Banned Books Week activities.

Why “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls Is a Perfect Song
“Iris” is indeed the perfect song and I really enjoyed hearing two fans give it well-deserved props in this fun and informative episode of Bandsplain. One nitpick, host Yasi Salek mentions the line “made to be broken” and does not mention it’s a reference to Soul Asylum’s 2nd album, “Made to Be Broken” (1986).
Whitmer Thomas (‘Terminal Crew of Dudes,’ ‘Weapons’) joins Yasi to break down “Iris,” the Goo Goo Dolls hit that became one of the defining songs of the late ’90s. They discuss the song’s origins on the ‘City of Angels’ soundtrack, the band’s punk beginnings, John Rzeznik’s singular and deeply inspiring (to Whitmer) hairstyle, and that iconic, rain-drenched performance of “Iris” in their hometown of Buffalo that somehow made a perfect song even more perfect.
Me on Amoeba Records “What’s in My Bag”
(I pull out my first record) “This is the 1998 Dizzy Up the Girl LP by the Goo Goo Dolls. It contains the greatest song of all time, Iris..” (I talk for 25 straight minutes)
Amoeba: “Anything else?”
Me (pulling out 6 more copies of Dizzy Up the Girl): “yes”
Here’s a lovely version with Daryl Hall taking it up a notch…

Hi, it’s me, Grandpa Joe from the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I used my family’s food budget to sign up for high-speed internet, and I just learned about this controversy surrounding a lesbian bar in Western Massachusetts. I don’t really know what lesbians are.

Your Moment of Zen: Bike Builds
Nic Vieri is a master bike mechanic who creates serene videos documenting the assembly of gravel bikes with cinematic closeups and soothing music. I know nothing at all about bikes but it is so satisfying to watch someone who is really good at their job do precision work.
The Genesis Croix de Fer has been around since before “gravel bikes” were really a thing. Long before every brand had a gravel bike in its range, Genesis was building a steel bike with wider tyre clearance, disc brakes and the versatility to ride almost anywhere.

I love Dan Clyne.
As Adam Amin is calling playoff baseball I feel the need to call out the time a South African tourist took a photo with him that I ruined so bad he came up and got my number to send it to me
