Good Good Things – Issue 26

Happy April, my fools and friends. Here are some good people and even better animals doing the lord’s work.

A Day in the Life of an Enshittificator

Man, this guy is so full of shit.

“The reason why Big Bird was a feature of my party was because, as a baby, I was obsessed with him and would always get so excited when I saw him on Sesame Street.” So says Lauren.”

Art UK Digitizes Thousands of Amazing Murals

Driving through Philly neighborhoods and discovering a new mural is always a treat. I’m a big fan of the artform, so I was excited to spend some time with this expansive archive of bold and beautiful British murals.

Ranging from small, spray-painted pieces by the notoriously enigmatic Banksy to large-scale compositions by Rogue-one, The London Mural Company, and more, the scope is daunting. “Our initial aim for the project was simple: we wanted to record 5,000 murals and wall-based artworks from across the U.K.,” says Art UK’s Public Art Manager, Tracy Jenkins. “The artworks would date from A.D. 1000 to the present day and include wall paintings in historic churches, post-war ceramic and concrete works, and contemporary painted murals and mosaics.”

Beavers and Bison Doing Beaver and Bison Things and Saving Nature in The Process

Scotland Released 11 Beavers Into a Dead River — What They Did With Mud and Sticks Was Unbelievable

Damn, beavers put in the work! Make sure you say thank you to your local beavers the next time you see them.

It was the boldest rewilding experiment Britain had ever attempted, and it started with just 11 animals. On May 28, 2009, in the first licensed mammal reintroduction in British history, 3 families of Eurasian beavers captured in Norway and quarantined for months were released into freshwater lochs in Knapdale Forest, Argyll. No beaver had lived in Scotland for over 400 years. More than 10 million people encountered the story within days.

They Set 4 Bison Loose In An English Forest… A Year Later The Transformation Was Extraordinary

I would lose my mind if I happened upon one of these large majestic creatures. Eventually I would chill out and we’d become friends, transforming forests and playing fetch together.

Nobody expected the woodland to survive the way it did. Not the researchers, not the land managers, and certainly not the four animals that arrived in Kent in twenty twenty-two and immediately started tearing it apart. European bison have been absent from Britain for six thousand years. What happened when they came back was not what conservation usually looks like — and the data from the first year changed how ecologists are thinking about woodland restoration across the entire country.

Why are so many metal bands wearing masks?

[Beavis voice] Um, because masks kick ass.

Alpha, the masked and nameless frontman of Portuguese black metal band Gaerea says, “When you start to sweat, you can’t see shit, or breathe, or sing” if you’re performing in a mask. “Last year we played a very tiny club in Stuttgart: super-packed, no ventilation. I can’t recollect a lot from that show, because I blacked out one or two times from heatstroke.”

Travel from Rotterdam to Amsterdam in 10 Minutes in a Little Boat You Will Fall in Love With

Following this intrepid little boat doing its thing is incredibly soothing.

In 2013 a special transport over water left from Rotterdam to Amsterdam. A timelapse camera was installed at 30 meters high. The resulting film gives a unique and stunning view of the old Dutch waterways, in 4K. And, you will pass a few dozen different bridges that all open before your eyes.

“Jeff, what are the best boat songs?”

(straightening out my captain’s hat) “Here’s my top ten…”

What Does Running a Trail Race Look Like?

Most people know what running a road race looks like. You run on a road or a street through a city or town and you see lots of building and houses and there are nice people cheering you on and handing you water and Gatorade. No mystery.

When I tell friends about running a trail race, I usually get, “Please don’t tell me about running a trail race, I don’t care,” or they just walk away as I start yapping.

For those who want a peek, I always recommend race recap videos by the best in the biz, Ryan Thrower. Here is a stellar video that captures the incredibly beauty, steep climbs, tricky descents, flowy runnable single-path trails, and the positive vibes of the beloved Chuckanut 50k in Bellingham, Washington.

Please note: if this was a PA or Northeast course, there would would be a lot more rocks on the ground.

Stone Pony Summer Stage

Stoked

Asbury Park, NJ is a fun hip town and a great place to see a concert, especially outdoors on the Stone Pony Summer Stage. Many years ago I went for a evening round-trip jog from Belmar to Asbury Park. As I left sleepy Ocean Gove I could feel the energy of its neighboring town approaching. I heard some classic punk that I immediately recognized blaring through the streets (the giant stage is across the street from the boardwalk). It was Bad Religion and they were killing it. What a lovely surprise!

I stood on a bench for the next half hour or so with a partially obstructed view and enjoyed the hell out of the show, despite learning they were opening for The Offspring on not headlining. I know, I know, the success of that Offspring album allowed Epitaph Records to thrive. Anyway… if a band you like is playing in AP this, definitely make the trip.

I’m going on June 27th, and I am Stoked to see Bane, Less Than Jake, The Bouncing Souls, and one of my top-ten favorite bands ever, the mighty Larry Arms.

See Summer Stage shows here.

Hi! I’m the inventor of bathroom stalls. The important thing for me is that everyone walking by a stall is able to make eye contact with the person sitting on the toilet inside. This is a critical design feature.
